Who Is the Top Real Estate Agent in Massachusetts? An Honest Answer

The Question Everyone Asks — And the Catch in It

"Who is the top real estate agent in Massachusetts?" sounds like a question with one answer. It doesn't have one, because "top" depends on the scoreboard — and anyone who gives you a single name without asking "by what measure?" is selling you something.

MLS Property Information Network (MLS PIN) Market Share reports give us two honest measures: dollar volume and transaction sides. Here's what each board actually says about 2025 — including where I land on both, good and bad.

By Dollar Volume: Not Me — and Here's Who

The 2025 volume crown among individual agents belongs to Tracy Campion, at roughly $404 million in closed sales — Boston-area luxury production, built on 75 transaction sides. On that same volume board, I ranked #213 in Massachusetts, with $30,196,995 across 78 units. I'm not going to pretend otherwise: if your definition of "top" is total dollars, in a state containing Boston's luxury market, a Greater Lowell agent doesn't win that board, and any Lowell agent who claims otherwise is hoping you won't check.

What I will point out is the arithmetic underneath. $404 million on 75 sides is an average above $5 million a deal. My $30.2 million came from the other end of the market — the $500,000 to $900,000 homes that most Massachusetts families actually buy and sell.

By Transactions: The Work Board Tells a Different Story

Now flip the board. In 2025 I closed 107 transaction sides statewide as an individual agent — 42.7% more transactions than the state's #1-by-volume agent (107 vs. her 75). On the captured statewide table — the top 500 individual agents by volume — no traditional agent (not a team, not a builder's in-house rep) posted more sides than that. Volume measures whose clients were richest. Sides measure who did the most work, for the most families, in the most ordinary — and most competitive — part of the market.

And in my own market there's no split decision at all. Per MLS PIN, I was Lowell's #1 agent in 2025 in both transactions (71 sides, 209% more than the #2 agent's 23) and volume ($16,854,695, 21.7% ahead of #2) — and #1 in both again in 2024, and #1 in transactions in 2023. Three straight years.

So Who's the Top Agent? Decide What You're Hiring

If you're selling a $5 million Boston penthouse, hire from the volume board. If you're buying or selling a home in Greater Lowell, the Merrimack Valley, or southern New Hampshire — the markets where I close 100+ sides a year — the transactions board is the one describing experience with deals like yours.

The rankings built on actual sales data agree: FastExpert ranks me the #1 agent in Lowell, and Clever Real Estate ranks me #1 in Lowell by total sales. Those aren't memberships. They're counts.

Whatever you decide, decide from the record — it's public, it's counted the same way for everyone, and any agent worth hiring will show you theirs. Mine is right here. To talk about your move: Chris Doherty, Doherty Properties, 978-857-9580, dohertyproperties.com.

There's a reason this post is titled "an honest answer" instead of just claiming the crown. The agents who blanket the internet with "top agent in Massachusetts" claims are usually reading from a directory list — and directory lists are commercial products, shaped by referral programs and memberships. The MLS record is the one ranking nobody can join, buy, or opt into. It just counts. That's the ranking this post is built on, and it's the ranking I'd tell any buyer or seller in Massachusetts to ask about — for me, and for anyone else they're considering.

Statistics per MLS Property Information Network (MLS PIN) Market Share reports, calendar year 2025 (Lowell streak: 2023–2025). Statewide figures reflect individual agents, teams excluded.
