People ask me where to eat in Lowell more than almost anything else, so here is my honest answer: these are the places I send people, the ones I eat at myself and put on the list when a client is new to the city. Lowell punches well above its weight at the table, from special-occasion dining downtown to a classic diner breakfast that has been feeding this city for generations.
Downtown Dining for a Night Out
When I want a proper dinner downtown, Cobblestones on Merrimack Street is the name that comes up first, a longtime favorite for steaks, seafood, and occasions worth dressing up a little. The downtown core around Merrimack, Market, and Central Streets has the deepest bench of restaurants in the city, with bistros, Italian kitchens, and pubs filling the old mill-era blocks. It is the part of Lowell I lived in for years, and dinner downtown followed by a show at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium or a River Hawks game is still my idea of a good night.
A Classic Lowell Institution
Every city has one breakfast place that belongs to everybody, and in Lowell that is the Owl Diner on Appleton Street. It has been serving Lowell since long before I was born, the kind of counter where the coffee keeps coming and half the room knows each other. If you are visiting to look at houses and want to understand this city in one meal, start there.
Flavors From Everywhere
Lowell's food scene reflects the people who built lives here. The city is known nationally for its Cambodian restaurants, and you will find outstanding Southeast Asian cooking, Vietnamese pho houses, Portuguese kitchens, Mexican and Latin spots, and Indian and Chinese restaurants spread from downtown out through the neighborhoods. Some of the best meals in the city come out of small storefronts you would drive past if a local did not point them out, which is exactly why I keep a running list for clients.
How to Eat Your Way Into the City
My advice to anyone moving here is to treat the restaurant scene as a neighborhood tour. Pick a part of the city, eat there, and look at the houses around it with full eyes. Food is how Lowell introduces itself, and the clients who fall for this city usually do it one dinner at a time. When we work together, ask me for the list; I am always glad to share where I would go.
