Lowell's calendar is anchored by one of the great American festivals: the Lowell Folk Festival, the largest free folk festival in the country, takes over downtown every summer. Around it, the city layers a summer concert series, holiday traditions, a fall marathon, and year-round seasons at the Tsongas Center and the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, so there is always a next date on the calendar.
Summer: The Festival and the Music Series
The Folk Festival arrives in late July with stages across downtown, music from every tradition, and food vendors reflecting the whole world that lives in Lowell. It is the weekend the city shows itself off, and residents plan their summers around it. All summer long, the Lowell Summer Music Series brings concerts to Boarding House Park, the Sampas Pavilion hosts riverfront shows in Pawtucketville, and neighborhood parks like Tyler Park run their own concert nights. Summer in Lowell is loud in the best way.
Fall: Marathon Weekend and Kerouac
October brings the Bay State Marathon, which starts and finishes in Lowell and draws runners and crowds to the riverfront streets, and Lowell Celebrates Kerouac, the annual festival honoring the city's most famous writer with readings, tours, and music. Fall also means the River Hawks return to the ice at the Tsongas Center and the Auditorium's season gets underway, so the calendar never really empties.
Winter and the Holidays
The City of Lights parade and holiday celebration lights up downtown at the start of the season, and WinterFest in February gives the city a reason to gather in the cold, with downtown festivities built around the season. River Hawks hockey carries the winter weekends, and the Auditorium fills the rest with touring shows and the New England Golden Gloves.
Year-Round and Neighborhood Traditions
Beyond the headline events, Lowell's year is full of cultural festivals, church and community fairs, farmers market days, and library and museum programs in every neighborhood. Each part of the city keeps its own traditions, and part of settling into Lowell is learning your neighborhood's calendar along with the city's. My family has our favorites, and I am always glad to compare notes.
Keeping Up With the Calendar
The easiest way to follow it all is to watch the calendars of the Tsongas Center, the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, the Lowell Summer Music Series, and the Pollard Memorial Library, since most of the city's year flows through those four. Neighborhood associations and the city's own event listings fill in the rest. New residents tell me the same thing every year: they expected a few big events and found something on the calendar almost every weekend.
